14 days before moving
Parking suspension - If you live in a controlled parking zone you may need to suspend the parking bay and/or parking meters at collection/delivery.

Phone/TV - Make arrangements with cable/phone companies and broadband provider.

Addresses - Notify change of address to pension, bank and building societies, doctor, dentist, your employer, former employer (old pension), life insurance, stocks and shares, financial advisor, car insurance, TV License, DVLC (driving licence), Local Authority (Council Tax), schools, magazine subscriptions and of course all your family and relatives!

7 days before moving
Electricity - Give the electricity company AT LEAST 2 days notice of your moving date.

Water - Check that the water will be connected at your new home. The water company also need AT LEAST 2 days notice of your moving date.

Gas - All of your appliances must be disconnected, and the meters must be read.

Newsagent - Remember to stop all of your orders, and any deliveries you may have (like newspapers for example). Make sure you change your address for any subscriptions you have, and find a newsagent in your new area.

Library - Remember to take back any books you still have on loan.

2 days before moving
Fridge/Freezer - You will need to empty, defrost and clean both of these appliances before you move home.

Loft - The loft needs to be emptied and the contents packed up before you move.

Keys - Check when the keys to your new home will be ready for you to collect.

Van - Make sure you have checked parking outside your new home and that there is enough room for the removal van. This will be a good time to get to know your new neighbours.

Food - Make sure that you have enough food until it is time to move, and a and a takeaway menu for your first night in your new home!

Dry Cleaning - Collect any outstanding items before you move.

The day of moving
Self Assembly Furniture - Dismantle all of these items, as well as taking down curtains, and any fixtures and fittings you want to move.

Label - Clearly mark all of your packed cartons so that the removal men know where to place them at delivery. Mark all fragiles in a RED pen and take away or label absolutely anything that needs to remain.

Essentials - Pack one box with all of the things you will need straight away. This may include the kettle, biscuits, coffee or your child’s favourite toy. This box should be marked clearly.

Pets - Keep pets as far away from the move as possible. They will need lots of care and attention afterwards to help them settle into their new environment.
